Immanuel Evangelical
Lutheran Church was founded by a group of German immigrants
and their families on July 3, 1901. For several years the
young mission church had held services in their native language
at the Salem Lutheran Church, whose members had graciously
offered the use of their building. At that time a pastor
was shared with First Lutheran in Waterbury. In November
of 1902 work commenced on the church building on Coen Street,
which was completed and dedicated the next year and which
remains as our sanctuary to this day. Over the ensuing decades
the young congregation adopted the English language for
services, and new people of wonderfully varied backgrounds
were welcomed into the congregation to join in sharing in
faith and fellowship.
